Thoughts on displaying reaction counts on posts

R ruby Public Seen by 8

Some Fedi softwares (eg. Akkoma) support adding emote reactions to posts. They function much like Discord's reactions, and display a count of how many users have added that reaction to a post.

I'm looking for input on how we feel about displaying that count to users. Should this be included in the "no numbers" rules along with likes/shares?

What are you proposing?

Should we hide reaction counts on posts?

Why is this important?

We should determine if reactions should be subject to the same rules as likes and shares.

What are you asking people to do?

If we support this, we'll need to patch softwares to hide counts of reactions, as well as the list of members that added that reaction. Otherwise, no further work is necessary.

How do you feel about the proposal? Leave a comment or make a suggestion for improvement.

This Sense check is an opportunity for your input and contribution, to help us make a better decision.

I feel like reactions are slightly closer to comments than likes, but akkoma also shows who reacted. so we don't need to show the number.

I think the cohost way of doing this (no count, but you can see who reacted) is probably ideal. a react count seems to have similar drawbacks as a like count, to me; numbers are (in part, or effectively) for the dopamine hit.

I'm definitely on board with not having numbers on reactions either, yeah. (Though letting users view who reacted to their posts should be kept around, IMO.)

You should always be able to see if someone reacted on yours, but i already have the reactions on posts disabled on all my frontends so i doubt I'll notice much of a change here.
