got general assent of folks around so i posted it

I'm checking for consensus on whether the following response sounds good to folks, because I can only answer an ask by speaking as the League account

We are using existing software: currently GoToSocial is our go-to, and the one that we are prioritizing patch efforts on, in order to support our needs as a site. Patches for other software (Akkoma is one that folks are also working on) will eventually happen; our hope is to have a diverse array of types of nodes.

Our current guidance is that any instance operator should try to keep their node to a manageable number of users for their moderation team. This means no open enrollment; operators should either manually approve accounts as people apply to join, or set their community to invite-only. That has the side effect of keeping obvious bad actors out.

The intent is that, while there is still the same workload (plus federation and governance overhead), it is spread out among a much greater number of people. It's much easier to moderate a site with 50-100 people on it than it is to moderate a site with 20,000 people on it.

Caveat that said guidance is not yet formalized, but I think that's the way to go anyway, personally

yeah, i actually explained the model here briefly to someone else (who is not on the League server but is giving moral support to the idea) so i can whip that into something a bit more formal you can also use as a stock response

makes sense to me. There's a real sense to me that like, the number of people involved has made this all more than the sum of its parts. Like, we have been having these convos.

I might add some things in the thread on cohost, but yeah this sums it all up

I think akkoma is good to go? I may be wrong, though, and it doesn't change the truth of the post.

@v1s1n afaik it's mostly sorted - only thing outstanding is "do we want to remove metrics from the mastodon-compatible API" which I have some initial work done on but whether that causes problems elsewhere, and if it's something we even want are both open questions

Seeking quick approval for a status update, for Cohost and the newsletter Closed Fri 27 Sep 2024 1:00AM

Checking with folks before I post this. Please let me know about any revisions I need to make or if I got anything wrong here.

We are rapidly approaching the point of having our first joinable communities, and we have designed and agreed upon a governance structure that is working well so far. Our decision-making body, the League Stewards, is currently 28 people. As of October 1, membership in the Stewards will be open to:

  1. any person who has acted, or is currently acting as a node's staff member at the time of League formalization, or

  2. any person vetted by the existing Stewards to become a node's staff member within the League, or

  3. any person with a relevant skillset, previous experience, or other characteristics that would contribute to the League's health and continuation, or

  4. any person that does not fit into the prior three categories, but is otherwise agreed to by consensus of the existing Stewards.

We are currently working on finalizing our instance operator code of conduct, our user code of conduct (i.e. the shared ruleset, based on Cohost's), and we will be working on conflict resolution and accountability systems.

On the software side of things, our developers are working on finishing both a patch set for GoToSocial (to remove numbers, timelines, and so on) and a setup guide, to make it easy for those who wish to run their own League sites.

New websites

In addition to our website, our newsletter, and the Discord server that our efforts are presently coordinated with, we have two new sites that are open for public viewing:

Information

Information is our wiki. It's where we'll be putting information on the League and how to participate: guides for node setup, guides for moderators (including their individual legal obligations as people running a small social media site), our operator/moderator code of conduct, information on publicly available nodes, information about League governance, and more. Anyone who is participating in the project can edit Information.

Consensus

Consensus is our decision-making and consensus-finding system. It's an instance of a piece of software called Loomio, which was designed by a worker's cooperative specifically for organizations like ours. So far, it's proven incredibly useful, and is making it much easier to gauge the opinions of the League Stewards and decide our course going forward. All are welcome to take a look at either of these sites, and our Discord, to see how our efforts are going, or to participate. We are building something new, and though we can reasonably expect to face a variety of struggles in this process, we are all excited about it.

**Edit 1**: revised "legal obligations" per sirocyl.
